Vaping for Beginners – Anatomy of a Vape Pen & How to Use it?

Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling the aerosol, often referred to as vapor, which is produced by an e-cigarette or similar device.

The term vaping originated in reference to the use of electronic cigarettes; however, it has since evolved into a generic term for all types of devices that produce an aerosolized mixture containing flavored liquids, nicotine, and other stabilizing chemicals.

Vaping devices are used by people to consume flavored liquids that may or may not contain nicotine. For others it is simply a pleasurable activity which they enjoy partaking in for its social aspect, making new friends while sharing their vaping stories.

It can be difficult to remember every step of using a vape pen, especially your first time. Below you will find the anatomy of a vape pen and therefore how it works. Check out this article on 510 thread cartridges:

Let’s start with what exactly is vaping?

Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling aerosol which is produced by an e-cigarette or similar device. The term ‘vaping’ originated in reference to the use of electronic cigarettes; however, it has since evolved into a generic term for all types of devices that produce an aerosolized mixture containing flavored liquids, nicotine, and other stabilizing chemicals.

In order to vape you need a device that can produce aerosol which is made up of four parts:

Liquid/E-liquid

Vape pens come in all shapes and sizes. The most common shape for a vape pen is the cylindrical ‘pen’ style, but more compact options are available such as box mod vape pens.

You can also find some vape pens that are more customizable which allow you to choose the size of your battery, wattage of the device and even colors.

The most common shape for a vape pen is cylindrical, but box mods offer a custom feel with features such as interchangeable cover plates and larger batteries and tanks.

The larger size allows for a longer life span. The larger tank also means it will take more e-liquid which in turn less refilling is required.

Vape pens can come with pre-set coils or be built by the user, both configurations function in the same way and have no effect on how they work. It just comes down to personal preference and how advanced your knowledge of vaping is.

Pre-made vape coils will have a pre-installed wire, wick and cotton. To use the coil you simply screw it into the vape tank or atomizer head that contains an e-liquid well.

Self-built coils require a bit more effort to build and install, however, the payoff is a much better flavor and cloud production.

Lastly, atomizers vary in size and function as well as shape and material used to make the coil head. The most common type of vape coils are made with Kanthal wire wrapped around a ceramic or steel core.

These atomizer heads can come pre-installed, but many times they are sold separately. They can be attached by screwing them into the atomizer base before attaching the atomizer head to the vape tank or box mod, which allows you to change out a coil after it has burnt out.

Battery

The battery is what provides power to the heating element inside of a vape pen. The battery size and shape vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. The larger the battery, the longer your vape sessions will last before needing a recharge.

Airflow System

The airflow system is responsible for controlling how much air gets pulled through the vaping coils when you take a drag off of your vape pen.

More importantly, it controls the amount of vapor produced while vaping. These are measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg).

The greater the pull on the vape, or airflow level, the more vapor produced. This is due to an increased pressure inside the atomization chamber formed by both air pressure and airflow level working together.

Basically, this means you should turn up your airflow levels when vaping at a high voltage to produce more vapor.

Coils and Wicks

The coils and wicks inside of a vape pen are responsible for heating up the e-liquid and turning it into an aerosol that you can inhale and exhale. The coils do this with different materials such as stainless steel or kanthal wire wrapped around a ceramic or steel rod.

When heat is applied to the coils the liquid inside of a vape pen vaporizes and creates an aerosol that can be inhaled and exhaled similar to a cigarette.

Charger

The last important part of a vape pen is the charger. The battery will need to be recharged after each vaping session. There are three components to a vape pen charger: the wall adapter, USB cord and an e-cig battery.

The wall adapter is connected to the vape pen tank by way of a USB cord that plugs into your computer or power brick for charging.

The anatomy of a vape pen is fairly simple. It contains three parts:

  • Mouthpiece – This is where you will take your puff from.
  • Atomizer – This is where the vaping magic happens. The atomizer heats up your e-juice and turns it into a mist that you can inhale.
  • Battery – This provides power to your tank, allowing your atomizer to heat up the e-liquid which creates vapor for you to puff on.

To use a vape pen there are just three simple steps you need to remember. Fill the tank with e-juice, replace the mouthpiece and press the button on your battery to activate your atomizer. Then what? Well now is where it gets fun. You get to enjoy your vape!

There are many things vaping can offer including:

-No combustion and as such no smoke.

-Produces a vapor that isn’t irritating to the people around you, unlike traditional cigarettes.

There are many things vaping can do which smoking cannot, for example: it is possible to vape in places where you wouldn’t be able to smoke (such as movie theatres and restaurants).

The most important thing to remember is that vaping should be enjoyed. Remember, you’re breathing in a vapor, not cigarette smoke. The chemicals may be very similar but they aren’t the same. If you ‘re going to use a vape pen for the first time, just remember what you have learned today and enjoy!
